This design is based on the F9F-5 Panther (D106, BuNo 125459) as flown by Capt. Royce Williams whilst flying with VF-781 during the Korean War. On November 18th, 1952, Capt. Williams shot down four MiG-15s during a dogfight where he would face-off against multiple MiG-15s in a truly incredible 7v1 battle that raged above the skies for 35 minutes. Upon return, it was noted that he had used all 760 rounds of the 20mm ammunition on board his aircraft and his aircraft had sustained 263 bullet holes. During his 37-year-long military career, Williams received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star and Legion of Merit with a Combat “V.” Click to watch the man himself recount this historic battle.
